• Other Multipurpose Tools. Like Evernote, OneNote is useful for outlining but also for other note-taking
and writing functions, and is available for Macs and PCs and for iOS and Android devices. You'll find a
detailed tutorial at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h07qZLLQc4I.
Using Document Creation/Collaboration Tools
Depending on your purposes, Evernote and other content management tools may not be the best fit for
your goals. For sharing and working on documents together, there are other tools, like wikis, Google Docs,
and Dropbox, that don’t offer the same content management functions as Evernote, but do offer exceptional
tools for collaborative writing. Google Docs and Dropbox are well suited for file sharing and working collab-
oratively on writing and group projects. Because the need for such tools continues to grow as more content
and information is produced, we find several similarities in the design and functionality across these kinds
of applications.
The
DESIGN OF DOCUMENT CREATION/
COLLABORATION TOOLS
The tools we are considering in this category have several important features. They support the following.
• A cloud-based repository for documents so they can be accessed from any device
• The sharing of documents among collaborators either after drafting/editing or as the work is going on
• Google Docs Figure IV.1.13: Entry page for Google Docs with basic
templates for composing with common genres
Google Docs provides a useful space for genera-
tive writing, drafting, and sharing. Like Evernote,
it is a cloud-based application that allows you
to access your work from multiple locations and
share and edit work with a group. Google Docs has
the added function of real-time collaboration. Once
another user is added to your file as an editor, you
can work simultaneously on a document.
Most readers will be familiar with the Google
Docs interface (Figure IV.1.13). On the top of the
page users can select a new “Blank” document
or choose from a list of document templates (i.e.,
resumes, reports, receipts, etc.). Below, the users’
files are listed.
